Best Practice(s)


A best practice is a safety or security-related practice, technique, process, or program attribute observed during an appraisal that may merit consideration by other DOE and contractor organizations for implementation because it: (1) has been demonstrated to substantially improve safety or security performance of a DOE operation; (2) represents or contributes to superior performance (beyond compliance); (3) solves a problem or reduces the risk of a condition or practice that affects multiple DOE sites or programs; or (4) provides an innovative approach or method to improve effectiveness or efficiency.

An activity or procedure that has produced outstanding results in another situation and could be adapted to improve effectiveness and efficiency in a current situation.

A method, procedure, process, or rule used to maintain quality as an alternative to mandatory legislated standards and can be based on self-assessment or benchmarking. The method or technique that has been generally accepted as superior to any alternatives because it produces results that are superior to those achieved by other means or because it has become a standard way of doing things, e.g., a standard way of complying with legal or ethical requirements.
