Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA)

Federal statute (also known as Superfund) enacted in 1980 and reauthorized in 1986, that provides the statutory authority for cleanup of hazardous substances that could endanger public health, welfare, or the environment. CERCLA addresses the uncontrolled releases of hazardous substances to the environment and the cleanup of former or otherwise inactive waste sites.
